HRI:UNArts has provided continual logistical updates and appeals through the International Disaster Information Network. An overview of current relief operations is available on ReliefWeb.

Long term support for Haiti is also a focus of current background discussions, with the United Nations Arts Initiative advancing the appeal made by the ONE Campaign for relief of Haiti’s $890 million international debt.

Subject: WHO Appeal - Haiti - Physicians/Surgical teams Refused Access

UN/WHO/FAO/WFP Appeal

19 January 2010

Dear Colleagues:

CNN is reporting that physicians and surgical teams that include Doctors Without Borders are being refused permission to land in Haiti. Lives are being lost because these physicians and supplies are not reaching the victims of this crisis.  People are dying because of lack of basic first aid, access to anitbiotics, etc., etc....

Isreal had mobile hospitals on the ground Friday night, while lead countries are still in the midst of assessment and are just starting to set up mobile hospitals.  It is said that physicians can access the disaster area faster by landing in the Dominican Republic and driving in, than by landing in the disaster zone itself. Command and control appears to be in chaos.... politicians can obtain access, but physicians and medical supply planes cannot.

This is not just a disaster to exploit for fundraising, we are facing perhaps the largest humanitarian emergency in recent history.

In the hope of immediate, intensive action to address these gaps.... We have 2-3 million plus, that need to be cared for in a refugee camp level capacity, as for death toll, a census count will need to be taken post disaster (pre-disaster 9.7 million in country).

Dear Colleagues:

Following the devastation of the Earthquake in Haiti, immediate appeals were advanced for a NATO level humanitarian operation.  Nobel Laureate Barack Obama coordinated an immediate United States Military response.  Despite extraordinary efforts, logistical challenges associated with air access has severely hampered operations:
In the context of the immediate humanitarian emergency, I am making a call to all countries in the region of Haiti with access by water (boat) to fast track medical disaster teams, all terrain vehicles, water purification, medical supplies and temporary shelters into the region.   Think through air transport to in countries in close proximity, transport into the region by water.   A logistical overview of current relief operations is available on ReliefWeb.

Long term support for Haiti is also a focus of current background discussions, with the United Nations Arts Initiative advancing the appeal made by the ONE Campaign for relief of Haiti’s $890 million international debt.

I  would also like to direct an appeal to the UN Secretary General to stop all actions within Haiti to shut down temporary hospitals on UN grounds. Special thanks to CNN for the real time reports.

In the hope for an immediate response,
