Arts In Crisis - Kennedy Center Initiative

Dear Friends:

Upwards of 10,000 arts organizations could dissappear in 2009, according to Americans for the Arts.

Since the capacity for survival encompasses the ability for an organization to pay it's bills today, emergency action must be pursued today.  This means an overview of your organization, it's mission, size and scope of your needs must be articulated to (1) your mayor and city council, (2) you state arts association and Office of the Governor, (3) newspaper, radio and television networks: city/state and (4) the White House (10,000 overviews to help focus attention on this matter).

In 1993, The Run Across America project was planned, programs in 133 cities coordinated and our major sponsors pulled out.  For most, this would mean the end of the project, for me such a concept was not an option.  We kept our focus intact, quality of the program at its highest level and moved on road with less then $500 to last 5.5 months.  It was a walk of "Faith" that once we took the first step, provided all the resources needed and more.

The sooner the public and our leaders have an understanding of the challenge, the sooner pathways for help can be coordinated.  Please let me know if I can be of further assistance, phone (203) 668-0282, email: s.m.apatow@humanitarian.net

This last week, I happened to stumble upon the following program being offered by the Kennedy Center.  I believe it would be constructive to pursue in conjunction with the steps outlined above:

The Kennedy Center is aggressively moving to broaden its role beyond a center for the performing arts by announcing a new program to share its years of management and fundraising experience with struggling arts groups across the country. -- Kennedy Center: 'Crisis' Counselor, Washington Post, 4 February 2009.

What happens behind the scenes, is what shapes the face of progress.  Artists have the direct connection with the grassroots level and have the capacity to inspire hope and healing.  The combination of these two encompasses the face of "Arts Integration Into Education," and our spectrum of work here in the United States and 192 member states of the United Nations. -- Stephen Michael Apatow
